Pedal power to raise nearly £1200 for diabetes charity

The team pushes itself to the limit at JDRF’s latest fundraiser in London

A local business has raised £1,197 for diabetes charity, JDRF.

Staff from Portafina, a pensions company based in Rochester, Kent, pushed themselves to the limit in the Ride to Cure Diabetes, a fast-paced exhilarating static bike competition in the City of London.

The event was held at Paternoster Square, next to the iconic St. Paul’s Cathedral on 18 May, with teams of five cycling as far as possible within eight minutes.

JDRF has been running the event for a decade and has already raised over £350,000 to fund vital type 1 diabetes research.

The charity is committed to eradicating type 1 diabetes and its effects for everyone in the UK with type 1 and helping those at risk of developing it.

The total from the latest event means that, to date, Portafina has managed to raise a staggering £6,722.82 for JDRF by holding several work events and individual fundraisers.

Participating in the race and supporting the team, Portafina’s Managing Director, Jamie Smith-Thompson is thrilled with the total amount that the team has raised and said:

“JDRF has a special place in my heart as my daughter, Isla, has type 1 diabetes. I know first-hand how tough the condition can be, not only for her, but our whole family.

“My wife and I regularly support the work that JDRF does in researching the condition and helping those, like Isla who suffer from it. We think that they do a fantastic job and I’m delighted to say that with the money that Portafina has raised, JDRF will be able to continue to do this.”

Sue Perrin, JDRF’s Regional Fundraiser for the South said:

“Being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes is difficult.  It can make that person feel sad or angry and probably quite scared.  Living with type 1 diabetes is a challenge for them and their family as they learn how to manage their type 1 diabetes day-to-day.  It can feel strange and overwhelming at times.

“JDRF wants to find the cure for type 1 diabetes so that the people affected don’t have to think about their type 1 diabetes every day, all day.  Portafina’s fundraising helps support the work of some of the best scientists in the world to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes.

“We really appreciate Portafina’s hard work, creativity and dedication to having fun while raising funds and bringing an energy and determination to the Ride to Cure.”
